PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

Set against the stunning Sanriku coastline in Nebama, Kamaishi City, this summer camp brings together junior high and high school students from around the world to learn, challenge themselves, and grow together.

This region has continued its recovery since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Through interaction with local residents, participants gain insight into the experiences of those affected by the disaster and the community’s path to recovery. They also come to understand how climate change and human activity are deeply connected to their own future.

While experiencing the richness of the ocean firsthand, participants learn about the challenges facing marine environments, including the issue of ocean plastics. The program encourages students to identify actions they can take in their daily lives, develop knowledge to protect themselves and others in emergencies, and work collaboratively to design and share solutions for the future.

Internationally trained specialists guide participants in small groups, ensuring a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment tailored to each individual. Working in English, students build leadership, initiative, problem-solving skills, and a global perspective.

Learning in nature, engaging with social challenges, and envisioning the future with peers from around the world — this unique experience not only fosters personal growth but also creates an unforgettable summer that expands each participant’s sense of possibility.

This program is delivered as part of the United World Colleges (UWC) X Initiative. Through shared challenges and new friendships, participants build confidence and learn to express their ideas. Many alumni note that experiences in proactive extracurricular activities like this program have become a meaningful strength when choosing future pathways and applying to universities.

Influenced by the high school and college students he met at the camp, he began to think about his future and where he would go to school. Also, after returning home, he actually showed me how to do lifesaving activities and how to tie ropes.

My daughter returned from AP Spring Camp and told me, “My perspective has changed as I learnt and discussed how to save lives, and how to consider the environment to connect to a sustainable society. Now, I would like to find out what I can do little by little and contribute so that I and the next generation can live happily in the future… starting by recycling plastics.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Japanese language ability required to apply?

1

No Japanese language proficiency is required. During the program, communication takes place in both Japanese and English, and we value participants’ willingness to engage and communicate actively rather than their language ability. Bilingual staff are available to provide support whenever Japanese language assistance is needed.

Can I participate on my own?

2

Yes. Most participants join the camp on their own. While some attend with siblings or friends, room assignments and activity groups may be arranged separately to encourage interaction with other participants.
